What's an email "Bounce" anyway?

If you aren't even sure what it means when an email bounces on one of your campaigns, an email bounce basically means we have tried to send the email to one of your subscribers but it wasn't able to get through to them.

There's lots of reasons why an email might bounce in the first place, including...

  • The email address doesn't exist anymore.
  • The recipients email inbox is full up. This is common on services like Hotmail where user account are limited in space.
  • The email server doesn't exist anymore. Maybe the user hasn't renewed their domain name, etc.
  • The email has been flagged as Spam.

As you can see, some of these reasons are sort of permanent (ie. The email address doesn't exist anymore), and some of them are temporary (ie. The receipients email inbox is full up) and as such we class the temporary bounces as "Soft" and the permanent bounces as "Hard".

What happens when an email bounces

When you send a campaign usually within a few minutes you will see bounced emails appearing in your campaign overview page

  • Any emails that bounce are automatically re-sent after 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours and then 72 hours.
  • Any emails that are still bouncing after 72 hours are then flagged as bounced.
  • By default, any emails that bounce in three campaigns in a row are deleted.
  • You can adjust wether or not we remove emails after three emails on the last section when you send a campaign.
  • If you would like to see exactly why emails are bouncing, you can click on the "Bounced" link on the view campaign screen, and then click "More info" next to any bounced email.
